Generative Zoning: Mining the City Toward Novel Ecologies

Year
2022
Description

Published in WASTE MATTERS: Adaptive Reuse for Productive Landscapes, edited by Nikole Bouchard, this book chapter discusses our research project “Generative Zoning” which explores ideas for mining spatial opportunities in the built environment, specifically looking at ways to reveal potential green spaces in the city and strategies to reduce habitat fragmentation. In contrast to the perception of zoning codes as an impendent to building development, this project presents zoning codes instead as a force that can be interpreted to shape the inverse, the spaces outside of the “building envelope.”
