2004, Chi Chi Taiwan Earthquake Memorial Competition (In collaboration with David Allin)

Our proposal uses the ground plane as the substance of the memorial. The existing ground is interrupted by a series of concrete walls which are structured to reveal moments of the site’s history by exposing fragments of buildings and untouched ground. The walls appear to be folded in way which suggests a lifting up of the ground plane, a formal maneuver which indicates the impermeability and malleability of its surface. The existing road is replaced by a perforated steel surface, allowing light to penetrate into an excavated lower level which is accessed by periodic ramps folded into the ground. One is continuously confronted with a ground plane that exists both above and below.
